According to a study by economist Joel Waldfogel, much of what we give each other as gifts is a wasted effort. Of  the roughly thirty-eight billion dollars that Americans spent on gifts in a resent  Christmas season, Walkfogel estimates that between four billion and thirteen billion dollars is spent on gifts that gave no value to the receiver whatsoever.
